CAPE TOWN IN SUMMER

We might be biased, but there really is nowhere we would rather be in summer.

Cape Town is home. TATUM was started here. Everything is designed here and made here. And when summer arrives, this city is pretty much the reason we make the clothes we make.

Because a Cape Town summer rarely involves getting dressed once.

You leave home in a bikini, throw something over it, end up having lunch somewhere, somebody suggests a drink, and suddenly it’s 8pm and you’re still wearing half of what you swam in.

That is very much our kind of dressing.

So this is not a definitive guide to Cape Town. There are plenty of those.

It is simply a few of the things we love about living here and cannot wait to do again this summer.

GET IN THE WATER

Yes, it’s freezing.

No, that doesn’t seem to stop us.

There is something about an early Clifton swim before everyone arrives that makes you feel ridiculously lucky to live here.

Get in. Get out. Lie on a warm rock until you can feel your toes again.

Then find coffee.

Perfect.

HEAD WEST

We love the West Coast.

It is a little rougher, quieter and less polished than the city, which is exactly the point.

Pack a swimsuit. Take the day. Find somewhere for lunch. Walk on the beach. Stay longer than you planned.

A lot of our summer inspiration comes from places like this. The colours, the sand, the faded buildings and that slightly windswept feeling that makes everything look better without trying too hard.

HAVE A VERY LONG LUNCH

This might be our favourite Cape Town summer activity.

Lunch at 1pm with absolutely no intention of still being there at 6pm.

But then someone orders another bottle, another friend arrives and nobody can think of a particularly good reason to leave.

So you don’t.

WEAR THE SWIMSUIT

Not just to swim.

This has always been part of TATUM.

Wear the one piece with trousers. Wear the bikini top under an open shirt. Put a skirt over your swimsuit and go straight from the beach to wherever you are going next.

We like clothes that earn their place in your wardrobe.

And frankly, if something can take you from Clifton to cocktails, even better.

TAKE THE LONG WAY

You know the drive.

Camps Bay. Llandudno. Chapman’s Peak.

Windows down. Hair an absolute disaster.

And every now and then you look out and think, how is this where we actually live?

Take the long way home.

STAY FOR SUNSET

Cape Town can be chaotic in summer.

The traffic is ridiculous. The wind can ruin your plans in approximately four minutes. Every restaurant you suddenly want to go to is full.

And then the sun starts going down and you forgive her for all of it.

Every single time.

TATUM could have been created anywhere.

But it wasn’t.

It was created here.

Designed here. Made here. Worn here.

And with summer on its way, we cannot wait to get back out there.
